Don’t Settle for Comfortable

Wise Words from Maya Angelou

A speech can truly transform a person.  I had the pleasure of hearing Past International President, Jana Barnhill, speak at the Toastmasters Conference in Chapel Hill the weekend of May 1-3rd.  During one of her speeches, she challenged us to push ourselves and “Don’t Settle for Comfortable.”

As many of you know, I’ve often pushed the company into new directions.  In the case of last year, we looked at the cartoon characters to work toward the children’s market.  That’s still on the roadmap, but due to some personal challenges, that had to be put on the backburner.  In fact, it might have been a blessing in disguise as we decided to move forward with an audio program with a partnership instead with Terry Bartlett (see previous post.)

Hearing that speech started me on the path of declaring my candidacy as a floor candidate for International Director for Toastmasters International.

Do you have that "Je ne sais quoi?"

IStock_000002545349XSmallToday is the first day of the Toastmasters International Convention in Palm Desert, CA. There are Toastmasters from around the world who have gathered here early for executive officer training and for officer elections.  As a newly elected member of the District 37 (State of North Carolina) Toastmasters team, I have been amazed by the number of dedicated people who have come here to dedicate their time to this organization. 

I've been especially surprised by the people who have been running for office.  Many of them have spent a great deal of their time developing marketing collateral, handouts and giveaways as they communicate their respective views about the organization.  It has already been illuminating to see the vast variety of presentations and the wide range of investments that have been made to the candidates' respective campaigns. No matter how flashy the material, in the end, I've found that to win our vote, it comes down to the following  key factors:

Shaping Lives…It's Toastmasters, Baby!

Toastmasters.color As you may know, I've started blogging again after a long hiatus.  I must thank my National Speakers Association (NSA) Blogger friends for their encouragement and support after attending the NSA Conference in Orlando a few weeks ago. 

One reason for my departure from blogging was the time I spent on my campaign for a Toastmasters International office in the State of North Carolina.  Between November 2009 and May 2010, I had been focusing much of my efforts on running for the Lieutenant Governor Marketing role for District 37.   It was an educational experience, and I am grateful that I had great advisors and supporters all along the way.  I learned how to craft a campaign and create a team of senior advisors.  I learned how to pull together a portable tradeshow display that I could bring with me to events throughout the State that included brochures and giveaways.   I found myself in Wilmington, Charlotte, […]
